Apparently, actors, producers and distributors have their ‘lucky theatres’ and its sentiments that rule when it comes to deciding where to screen their new movies. It’s believed that RTC Crossroads, which houses around 10-12 theatres, is the first choice by most producers because all the theatres here are considered lucky.
Mahesh Babu’s film Pokiri is slated for release on April 28 and Sudharshan 35 mm is the team’s choice. According to a unit member of the film, who wish to remain unnamed, “ We zeroed in on Sudershan because all his earlier films, Murari, Okkadu and Athadu, hit the 100 day benchmark when screened there. It has proved to be lucky for him time and again, so Sudershan will be a natural choice for all Mahesh Babu Films in future.”
However, actors can’t always charm Lady Luck. When Siddarth’s film Nuvvostanante Nenuoddantana completed 100 days in Shanti Theatre, it was an obvious choice to screen his second film Chukkallo Chandrudu there. He was reported saying,’Shanti is lucky theatre for me.” However, despite all the hype and lucky charms, the film bombed.
To avoid any kind of bad luck producers play safe by avoiding unlucky theatres like plague. Balakrishna whose film Veerabhadra will be released on April 29 is trying to get his film into Sudarshan 70 mm. “Since his recent film Samarasimha Reddy celebrated its silver jubilee here, this is our choice. Even though there are other theatres that are free now, we have decided to wait for Sudershan to be done with the movie that being screened currently,” says Mr. Rambabu, the PRO of Balakrishna.
However, there are those like M.S.Raju who refuse to tie down the success of a movie to a particular lucky charm. He is planning to release his film Pournami in Devi theatre this time as opposed to Shanti where he screened his two earlier hits. Though the fact is that Shanti is already screening Sri Ramadasu, Mr. Raju says that he is not worried. “ I don’t believe in such superstitions. My film’s sound requirements can only be met by Devi theatre, so it was the obvious choice,” says M.S. Raju.
The forth coming weeks we will see theatres at RTC crossroads abuzz with activity. Whether the cinemas will remain to be seen as lucky mascots will be known in a couple of weeks.
